The Joseph Groh Foundation is an incredible organization that gives financial support to people in the construction industry who endured life-altering injuries. Every year the organization honors numerous recipients with a grant and earlier in the year the Joseph Groh Foundation was excited to introduce Adil Karamally as a recipient.
Adil, born in Pakistan, obtained his MBA from the University of Chicago and afterwards bought ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and obtained his HVAC and general contracting license. Ten years later, Adil suffered a major stroke at only 48 years old. He lost the use of his left arm and the stroke left his left leg majorly impaired, resulting in foot drop. Because he could only walk while using a heavy brace, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors were concerned that he would most likely become permanently in a wheelchair.
No longer able to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their only source of income, putting financial tension on the couple with a young child in elementary and three more children in college. They became optimistic when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, a piece of equipment that uses functional electrical stimulation to help people with Adil’s condition walk again. However, Adil and Laila soon learned that they would not be able to afford the WalkAid System in addition to the extensive rehab that Adil would need so he could understand how to use it.
Fortunately, a specialist at WalkAid directed the couple to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the generous grant, Adil got the WalkAid System and has seen great success. His muscle is no longer indicating atrophy and is actually starting to regenerate, bringing optimism back to Adil and Laila.
