Stay Warm and Safe This Winter

January 12, 2017

With the winter weather we all tend to spend most of our time indoors trying to stay warm. While sometimes snuggling in bed and drinking hot tea will do the trick, Abbey Air Service Experts is here with some tips on how to stay warm (and safe!) this season.

Install Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Verify you have carbon monoxide (CO) detectors installed on every floor of your home, especially near bedrooms, and test them to confirm they are working. Since CO cannot be detected because it is odorless and invisible, it’s crucial that you have functioning CO detectors to make sure your home is safe.

Get Your Chimney Inspection

This is the perfect time of year to get the fireplace going, but before you do, be sure you have your chimney cleaned and inspected by an expert. The fireplace can be a source of CO if you don’t keep it properly cleaned and maintained.

Be Careful with Space Heaters

Space heaters are generally safe, energy efficient, and an effective way to heat small areas of your home, but make sure it has been sanctioned by a recognized testing laboratory and comes with an automatic shut-off feature. Observe all manufacturer’s instructions and make sure it is placed on a hard, level surface at least 36 inches away from any flammable items.

Furnace Tune-Up

With a heating tune-up from Abbey Air Service Experts in Oakville, we will perform a safety check of your heating equipment to make sure there are no leaks or carbon monoxide issues. Along with a furnace tune-up, verify your heating vents are free from obstruction and that you’re swapping out your air filter every 30 days. This will prevent the air flow from becoming restricted and help avoid allergens from exacerbating respiratory issues.

If You Need Help Staying Warm, Ask

There are appropriate ways and wrong ways to make sure your home is heated – using the oven, a grill, or a camp stove are all wrong ways. Using these devices to heat your home could cause a fire or a dangerous reserve of carbon monoxide.
